I may have the opportunity to trade my modded for a 2002 gt 5 speed with 150000k. Should i do it? are the 99-04 powerful? Are they as easy to work on and modify? just looking for some input on what some 99-04 owners think coming from a fox body. thanks

I have a fox, but have done some work on 4.6's. The Fox is easier and a little cheaper to mod, especially for the do it yourselfer. It all really comes down to what you prefer. Keep in mind there are tons of 99-04's out there still and not alot of clean foxes. Also, depends on what yours is worth...and 02 GT with 150k's wouldn't be worth all that much.

they're powerful but you don't feel the low end grunt that you do in a 5.0...they don't build torque til 3-3500 rpm, but you can shift at 6200 without worrying about damaging anything. the trannys are more robust also

outta the box they're just as fast down the strip, or a bit faster

I find my '99 easy to work on, but obviously 2 totally different engine designs

i am finding it really hard to want to part with my fox. I have spent alot of time and money blood sweat and tears. I have done everything my self but have this itch for change. my only worry is getting into the new car it not pleasing me like my torque monster does.

Ive had the same thought.. trading my fox for a 99+ black vert....had an offer but i think my cars worth more than a stocker with higher kms.

Totally different beasts though

well this is the thing, my cars is new from top to bottom and only 103xxx oniginal kms tonnes of engine work..but ive screwed myself out of a daily driver. this pig needs aviation fuel to run properly, with my setyup and gearing isnt a very traffic friendly car, scared of getting pulled over LOL woudlnt miss the poor handling and lumber wagon ride kinda why im looking at 02 gt

Why don't you just take your Fox down a couple of notches so you don't have to worry about the above things and then you can drive it and enjoy it... Why do you need avation fuel exactly?

Well, I've seen some pretty serious stuff roll out of the local shops and for the street, they only require pump gas. I know a Fox computer is limited for tuning, but have you considered getting it properly tuned or SCT'd so you don't have to go with airplane fuel?

I agree with Armen. I know of a 9 second mustang running on pump gas, and some 11 second ones still running 87 octane.
Unless your running gobs of boost, or shy high timing, theres no need. And if its needed for top end only, then just pick up a water injection kit.

To add with some of the other suggestions....ride quality can be substantially improved with the FRPP front lower control arms. By the sounds of it, you have alot done to the car so I assume other suspension components have already been changed.
Another thought....why not put classic insurance on it...like from Zehr's or Silver wheels and pick up a cheap daily driver?

purplepony
10-22-2010, 11:53 PM
all suspension has been done urethane this tubular that, there is no escaping all foxes ride like shiaat LOL oh its not the insurance thats only 50 a month. i dont need a daily driver i have 5 vehicles lol. I dunno i think its more im looking for a change. ive done everything there is to do other then a blower and a few things..still dont think i could part with it. my wife always says dont waste anyones time you wont get rid of the whore...she calls my car a whore "jokingly"

only reason to run av gas is horsepower greed :firedude:. Back off the timing. Whats your compression 12:1?

You can always install a thicker head gasket to lower it a little more.

I would stick with the fox unless your going for more of a daily driver. Foxes can ride very nice. You just have to get rid of the full race setup.

If you do the suspension properly on the fox I see no reason why it would have a bad ride...

purplepony

im not saying it rides horrible, hand and feet above stock but comparing it to a newer car it doesnt compare...and yes my compression is very high hense the needs for higher octane..timing is 11.5-12:1 timing at 15 degrees advanced cam straight up

Like I suggested... Maybe make it more street (pump gas) friendly and you'll prolly enjoy it more.

I know I'm enjoying mine more than ever right now because it's a pretty basic set-up.

on the 4.6?

unless you're doing a head swap, everything is just as straight forward as the 302.

at first, I thought they were complicated....until I started wrenching on it. they're not that difficult, just not as much room cuz they're so damn wide

You probably will regret this especially if the fox wasn't a daily driver.

Stick with your fox. 2v SOHC sucks. no offense. But of the 5.0, SOHC and DOHC, guess who is on the bottom?

2 valve doesent suck your comparing apples to oranges two different cars 5.0 are nice track cars but you cant beat the ride and power of a modular
ive had both and would never ever go back

here are two pics, shes dirty! a very eventful trip to london trailering my fox up for the trade. we got a flat on the trailer about 10km outside of woodstock. i had very little fuel in the fox. had to back the car off the trailer to take the weight off the back trailer tire and i followed my brother into woodstock. got to piss off woodstock for 20 mins with the fox. lol. tire was replaced and we were on our way in under a half hour.

Car looks very clean, I see it came with the off-roading package ;)

Needs more low.

But there really is no comparing the ride quality of a new edge to a fox. So much quieter and more 'adult' feeling than a fox body.

yea def some gears..it takes forever to get it to 5grand...but accelerating all the way up nicely..im still used to my fox winding out every gear in the blink of an eye..def a huge step down in power but ill trade that for the comfort and big boy feel of this car...everyone tells me ill miss it but they didnt get to drive it all the time...i had my fun..next!
